Electronic data capture
A Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), which is also known as a handheld computer, is a small simplified computer that can be carried in the palm of the hand. Handheld computers are versatile and relatively inexpensive, and can bring the benefits of the computer to the field side while saving on costs and time.
Traditionally, data were first recorded on a data sheet; at some later time, the data would be entered into database. This system requires that two separate blocks of time be committed to collecting and entering data. However if data could be entered into the database at time of collection, not only would the amount of work be reduced by half but the accuracy of entry would likely be improved. If the paper system is replaced by electronic data capture at point of collection such as possible with the PDA it will provide many benefits.
Electronic data capture will reduce data collection time, eliminate data centre entry time, reduce errors (missing information and inconsistent data), allow quick feedback to field, reduce returns to the field to correct data, save on paper costs, save on paper storage archive space, and reduce the overall cost of running the system. electronic tools will help the field staffs, reduce the weight as the field staff no longer need to carry the big volume and solved the storage problem.
