Satellite remote sensing provides rich, continually updated data sets at zero or low cost.  DSS sites are gaining experience with how to exploit this opportunity.  Some examples for rainfall, land cover and land use are provided here. For directly monitored environmental issues, telemetry from sensors such as portable weather stations and other methods appropriate in DSS sites are becoming available.
