Kintampo - Ghana Dr Seth Owusu-Agyei (

) has been the Director of the Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC) since 2002. He is an epidemiologist with extensive experience in the design and conduct of clinical and field intervention trials.
Dr Owusu-Agyei obtained his PhD training in Malaria Epidemiology at the Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel, Switzerland (2001). He worked at the Navrongo Health Research Centre, Ministry of Health, Ghana as a Senior Health Research Scientist & Head of Biomedical Department until his transfer to head the KHRC, Ministry of Health, Ghana. He was appointed as the Director of the KHRC and also worked on part-time basis as a Lecturer in the Departments of Epidemiology & Population Health and Infectious Tropical Diseases, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and as Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Legon. Dr Owusu-Agyei was one of the senior members who characterized the malaria epidemiology of the Navrongo Health Research Centre and developed it into a malaria vaccine and drugs testing site. He has since his transfer to the Kintampo Health Research Centre established a malaria centre of excellence in the middle belt of Ghana. Kintampo malaria epidemiology has been characterized (ref: www.ghana-khrc.org), GCP compliant projects have been carried out by testing the safety and efficacy of Artesunate Combination Therapies amongst children and adults in the district. As the Principal Investigator, KHRC is currently carrying out trials on the RTS,S malaria vaccine in Kintampo with sponsorship from PATH-Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Biological. Another study on safety and efficacy of Chlorproguanil-Dapsone-Artesunate fixed dose is underway with sponsorship from GSK, Medicine for Malaria Ventures (MMV) and WHO. Dr Owusu-Agyei has been Principal Investigator for several clinical/field interventions trials and authored/co-authored several papers in peer reviewed journals.
