Professor Thomas Smith holds degrees in genetics, experimental pathology and medical statistics from universities in the UK. Since 1984 he has worked in the field of infectious disease epidemiology, including a period of 4 years in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and 16 years at the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI), where his research has focused on the epidemiology of malaria. His particular interests are in the design and analysis of observational field studies of malaria and of trials of interventions against Plasmodium falciparum. He has worked on various studies of vaccines, chemotherapy and vector control, mainly in PNG, Tanzania, and Ghana. Currently he heads the STI Biostatistics and Epidemiology Unit where his main activity is the simulation modeling of the epidemiology and control of malaria, with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
