Dr. Sciortino, a medical anthropologist and development sociologist by training earned her doctorate at the Vrije Universities, Amsterdam with honors. Currently, she is Associate Professor at the Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, and Visiting Professor at the Master in International Development, Chulalongkorn University. From 2001 to 2006 she has been the Regional Representative and Director, Southeast Asia Regional Program of the Rockefeller Foundation, establishing the Southeast Asia Office in Bangkok and leading health, agriculture, and culture grant-making activities in the region. Prior to that, from 1993 to 2001 she was program officer Human Development and Reproductive Health at the Ford Foundation in Indonesia and the Philippines. From 2000 to 2003 she also chaired the Gender, Reproductive Health and Fertility module in the International Master’s Program in Medical Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. She has extensive experience in supporting academic and intervention programs and in conducting research in Southeast Asia, and is presently consulting for the World Bank and the Asia Development Bank on health and development issues in the region. She sits in a number of advisory boards, including with the Southeast Asia Consortium on Gender, Sexuality and Sexual Health, the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development, Chiang Mai University, and the China-Mekong Institute. She has published widely and her monthly column, Mekong Currents" on developmental topics is published by Inter-Press Services (www.newsmekong.org/mekong_currents). A native of Palermo, Italy, she fluently speaks Italian, Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia..
