Since 1986, Stig Wall is a Professor of Epidemiology and Health Care Research at Umeå University, Sweden. He founded and led the Division of Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences there until 2007 after which he directs its Centre for Global Health. Since 2001 the division is also hosting Umeå International School of Public Health. Professor Wall is also, since 2003, the Director of its WHO Collaborating Centre on Epidemiological Surveillance and Public Health Training.
He is Scientific Adviser to the Swedish National Board of Health and Social Welfare and Board member of its Epidemiological Centre, EpC. He was a member of the Swedish Council for Social Science Research and chairman of its Peer Review Committee for public health research 1990-98. He chaired the Swedish Epidemiological Association 1996-98. He is currently member of peer-review committee at the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation.
Professor Wall has served as temporary adviser to the WHO and been a member of its steering committees for tropical disease research and intersectional action for health project. He has chaired Sida/SAREC´s peer review committee for biomedical and public health research and been a member of peer-review committees at the Swedish Council for Coordination of Research, the National Cancer Fund and the Swedish Foundation for Health Care Sciences. He was member of the program committee of INCLEN, International Clinical Epidemiology Network, 1998-2000 and was Deputy Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of INDEPTH 2003-2007. During 2000-2007 he was Editor-in-Chief of Scandinavian Journal of Public Health and is now founding an Open Access journal, Global Health Action, within the Centre for Global Health.
Professor Wall has been the external expert for the appointment of 14 professorships in epidemiology or public health related fields and has served as member of teams to assess several national and international research institutes. He has published about 220 scientific works on international health, epidemiological methods, environmental health, prevention and medical technology assessment. He has edited or contributed to about 30 textbooks or official documents in the field of public health research and health policy
