Prof. Osman Sankoh, a Sierra Leonean, became the Executive Director of the INDEPTH Network of health and demographic surveillance systems (HDSSs) in Africa, Asia and Oceania in 2007. He held the position until March 2018.Before that he was the Deputy Executive Director (2006-2007) and Manager for Scientific Communications and External Relations (2002-2006). He worked as a Scientist at the Institute of Public Health, University of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany (1999-2002) and as a Research and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Mathematics at Njala University in Sierra Leone (1987-1989). Prof. Sankoh has a DSc in Applied Statistics from the Technical University of Dortmund, Germany. From the same institution, he acquired his MSc. in Applied Statistics and Spatial Planning and his BSc. (Hons) in Statistics and Spatial Planning. Further, he holds a BSc. Ed. in Mathematics from Njala University. Prof. Sankoh serves on editorial boards of international journals such The Lancet Global Health, International Journal of Epidemiology, and Tropical Medicine and International Health. He has more than 90 peer-reviewed publications which have appeared in a range of international journals on epidemiology, biostatistics, population and health, public health and environmental impact assessment and management. He holds honorary appointments in the School of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and in the Faculty of Public Health, Hanoi Medical University in Hanoi, Vietnam.
