The Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research (IMR):

  • employs around 550 people
  • is a statutory body
  • is funded by the PNG Government and other donors
  • began work in Goroka in 1968
  • has laboratories and offices in Alotau, Goroka, Madang, Maprik, Port Moresby and Wewak
  • has further study sites in Hides, Karkar, Tari
  • targets malaria, pneumonia, filariarsis, respiratory disease, sexual health, malnutrition
  • is the independent research arm of the PNG Department of Health
  • is governed by a 14-member Council.
